Big Sur
Big Sur, originally uploaded to Flickr.
Big Sur feels even more remote than it once might have: No mobile, no internet, heck, the hotel we stayed in didn't have old-fashioned phones. So, there we were, without a television, on Sunday March 5, the night of the Oscars. Virginia and I decided to head to the Redwood Grill. We had fantasies of watching it on a big screen, eating steak, and having a big log fire to warm ourselves by. And you know what? Our dreams came true. Except that is, for the fact, that Brokeback Mountain didn't win best picture.
We also discovered a very big secret. When you watch the Oscars live you don't have all the ads. It went from 5 pm to 8.30 pm, and that included red carpet time. By 9 pm we were under fluffy quilts in a wooden cabin reading LA detective novels in preparation for the next part of the trip.
UPDATE: Jellyfish's Oscar recap is most wonderful.
