I was very ambivalent for most of it, but by the end I'd come around to thinking it was very good. I think what frustrated me was McEwan's permanent sense of threat and tension - it starts to strike a single note for me. I get tired of it. But admire him as well.

Hi - I hope this reaches you sophie. I need you to tell your father how wonderful his book Fantastic Cinema was. I just bought it today from a charity shop and am finding it so joyous to read already that I needed to track him down and tell him. It's just so thoughtful and considered, and not at all lofty.
