Breath

Pavlov's Cat writes particularly well today on Tim Winton's Breath (the Breath website was built by Virginia) and other matters. I am in the middle of reading Breath and enjoying it but I totally agree with her that Winton's Christianity is relevant to his writing. I don't mean that that's 'good' or 'bad'' - just relevant. There is also another line in this post which I totally love (it's not related to Winton, by the way, but Martin Boyd):' Given that most people die of being themselves in any case, surely the line -- that distinction between suicide and whatever the other thing is -- is often greyer and fuzzier than most people are prepared to admit in any case.'

Views from the Floor

Luke says:

aye. i read breath--2 copies of it were given to me in hospital not 3 weeks ago--people trying to give me some advice??

i was so mad--great little project, deft prose, tight and classy. not the sprawling epics of old-skool winton. but the point--what was the point? who NEEDS to read this book? why do they need to read it?

so really, my question is more about what we expect from authors. who wants to be pushed? who wants to disappear for a day and a half? this is what i want to know...
