Chalk
One of the great things about being disorganised and not always not knowing what you're doing is that when I walked over Cuckmere Meadows
in the last few hours of my four day walk and came to this
I was suprised. Then I looked East, and saw this.
Several ups and downs later I was almost at Birling Gap.
That is when I remembered a line from Leonard Woolf's diary, a line that I had transcribed the week before. It was written in April 1912: 'Took a boat to Cuckmere and walked to Eastbourne. We sat on the cliff's near Birling Gap she was extraordinarily gentle. I kissed her.' So, I had finally walked myself to their first kiss. Later she said the kiss caused her to feel nothing but I still felt happy for them, for his moment of joy if nothing else. A flowering moment in a chalky landscape.

Brilliant. Thank you.
How's the changeover in the cliffs from sandstone to chalk, too.
All your travel pics are beautiful, Sophie (Have read down from horizontal Spain.)
