The marvelous Ms Fits, one of Australia's funniest, toughest and out-there bloggers, suspects ousted Liberal MP Andrew Olexander was onto something when he recently accused the Victorian Liberals of homophobia. She quotes the shadow treasurer Robert Clark and his, ahem, enlightened views, on the homosexual lifestyle: 'I believe homosexual practices form a destructive way of life . . . it is a physical fact that the human body is not designed for many homosexual practices and it is clear that physical problems follow from these practices.' As Ms Fits implies, homophobes are happiest when dwelling on the physical. Certainly they seem to think about such matters more than gay people do themselves. Conservative American (and Gay) blogger Andrew Sullivan, refers to this when he writes, 'Anyone committed to human freedom in any way finds torture an abomination; and my abhorrence of it stems from my religious faith and also my love for America and all she has always stood for. To try and trivialize my position on this . . . is simply beneath civilized discourse. As is the crude reduction of my defense of the dignity and equality of homosexual persons as a mere defense of my own "sex life".' The Vatican too has also been giving the matter a lot of thought and this week they announced they were banning anyone with 'homosexual tendencies' from becoming a priest. This leads Anonymous Lefty to ponder the multiple hypocrisies and contradiction inherent in such a position, such as the fact that, 'heterosexual Roman Catholic priests aren't allowed to have sex, either - but it's important to make sure that the sex they're not thinking about and not having is with women. (Because God is apparently kind of petty that way.)'
