Helen and Helen
Fiction or non-fiction? Jason Steger talks to Helen Garner about her new novel.
After Geography I am no stranger to the confused debates around the question of autobiography vs. fiction. I think Helen Garner's frustration with categories is understanding, and I share it, but I do question her calling her main character Helen in her novel The Spare Room, drawing parallels to her own life through referring to other personal details - then being so prickly about the questions that raises. Interesting discussion though.
