44 - the number of the aged
I turned 44 on Boxing Day. I feel old and a bit depressed. Anyway, moving right along: what made the day nice was hanging out with friends in the Carlton Gardens for a couple of hours.

Cricket was played.

After that we went to seeThe Golden Compass. It was good, and worth seeing - but not as good as the book and trailed away, somewhat disappointingly, at the end. The highlights are the Bears, and Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra -perfect casting. Phillip Pullman writes in the Guardian on the inevitable loss of poetry when you translate a book into film. I think he's right that you can't compare two such different forms to each other. None-the-less it's difficult not to prefer one over the other.
